7 slot myths that quietly cost you money
Hot machines, near misses and the 'due' jackpot — what's true and what isn't.

Modern slots are driven by a random number generator (RNG) that produces thousands of results per second. Each spin is independent. Keep that in mind and most myths fall apart.
1. "This machine is due to pay"
No. The RNG has no memory. A slot that hasn't paid for 300 spins is exactly as likely to pay on the next spin as one that just hit a bonus.
2. "Hot and cold machines"
Streaks happen in any random sequence. Seeing one doesn't mean the game will continue the pattern.
3. "Near misses mean you're close"
Two scatters and a third just above the line is designed to feel exciting. It tells you nothing about the next spin.
4. "Stopping the reels early changes the outcome"
The result is decided the moment you press spin. Slam-stop only changes the animation.
5. "Casinos tighten slots at night"
In regulated markets the RTP is certified and can't be changed on the fly. Different versions (see our RTP piece) are chosen in advance.
6. "Autoplay pays less"
Autoplay uses the same RNG as manual spins.
7. "Bigger bets get better odds"
For almost all modern video slots, RTP is the same at every stake. A few older games — like classic jackpot machines — are an exception, so read the paytable.
